How Students Grow
Growth begins with curiosity. Reading deeply, thinking critically, and writing clearly are lifelong practices that develop together. Every coaching relationship at Landry English is designed to help students grow in all three.
Reading deeply is a practice. Students learn to ask meaningful questions, notice patterns, consider multiple perspectives, and build thoughtful interpretations grounded in the text. They reread. They annotate because they have something to say, not because they have been told to do so. They learn to remain engaged when a text feels challenging or uncertain, recognizing that great literature often asks us to reconsider what we think we know. Over time, reading extends beyond the page and becomes a way of engaging more thoughtfully with the world.
Reading Deeply
Thinking critically takes time. Students develop the habits of observing carefully, asking thoughtful questions, examining multiple perspectives, and distinguishing between fact, opinion, and inference. They build evidence-based interpretations they can confidently defend while remaining open to ideas that challenge or reshape their thinking. Independent thinking begins with intellectual courage—the willingness to wrestle with uncertainty, trust the process of careful thinking, and continue asking questions long after the discussion has ended. Critical thinkers are rarely satisfied or "done" with their thinking.
Thinking Critically
Writing is a powerful form of communication because it makes our thinking visible. Writing does not begin when the pen meets the page. It begins with a question, an observation, or an idea worth exploring. Through thoughtful feedback, intentional revision, and reflection, students learn to communicate complex ideas with clarity, precision, and purpose. More importantly, they learn that strong writing is not about getting it right the first time. It is about grappling with ideas, refining them, and discovering that the process of writing often changes what we think.
